 9/24/2002 Bush's Message Atrios at Eschaton has posted some comments on yesterday's Gore speech from various right-wingers. Take a look at what they're saying. Sometimes it is hard for me to figure out what Bush and his crowd are really trying to say. I've learned over the years that when the message isn't clear to you, it can help to find out what the listener - who the message is intended for - is hearing. Gore Speech Most news stories that I have seen covering Gore's speech yesterday focus on the politics. As The Note put it, "The questions that arise are: 1) did he serve himself well? And 2) did he serve the Democratic party well?" (I'm aware that The Note covers politics, I'm using this quote because it sums up what I've seen of the news coverage as well. In fact, the Note is one place that does get into the content and merits.) What about the country? What about war? What about the people who are going to die, and the region that might be destabilized? What about the effect an Iraq adventure might have on our efforts to prevent terrorism at home? I think that Gore is trying to stop the country from making a serious mistake. I think that is more important than the politics of it. I think that Gore has done the country a great service. I think that any news outlet that doesn't spend time discussing the MERITS of the CONTENT of what Gore said shouldn't call itself a news outlet. I think that the people working in the news business don't even know what the word "news" means. What Else Are They Capable Of? As the election approaches I'm sure we all feel steamrolled by events. It's clear that the Democrats are having great difficulty coming up with a way to counter this Iraq situation arriving just exactly in time for the election. Iraq is dominating the news, the Congressional agenda and the election campaign. On top of that, the Republican "machine" of TV pundits, newspaper columnists, op-ed writers, radio talk show hosts and wholly-owned subsidiaries like the Fox Network and the Washington Times are marching at full speed in a coordinated and well-planned attack painting Democrats as obstructing the "President's war effort", less-than-patriotic and even somehow treasonous. It's also clear that the Republicans have been planning exactly this situation for some time. There is no reason for the immediacy of war with Iraq - it isn't an imminent national security emergency, there's no new news, there's nothing but the election to explain what's going on. Labor Day is the traditional start of election campaigns and Labor Day is the very day that they rolled out this "marketing campaign" as they themselves referred to it. Imagine - a war planned just in time for the election campaign - it appears that the Democrats just did not anticipate what the Republicans are capable of. The Democrats did not imagine the current scenario and consequently did not plan for it. So let's imagine another scenario. It's late October and the polls show that the Democrats are pulling out of this and appear to be ready to gain a number of seats in the House and Senate. I think we should ask the question now - What are the Republicans capable of between now and the election if it looks like they're losing? 9/22/2002 Who's On the News Found on Bushwatch-- FAIR has a study out, looking at network news sources. A study of ABC World News Tonight, CBS Evening News and NBC Nightly News in the year 2001 shows that 92 percent of all U.S. sources interviewed were white, 85 percent were male and, where party affiliation was identifiable, 75 percent were Republican.Big surprise. Dear Economists, From now on when you do studies concluding that government regulations cost the economy please remember to factor in the costs of not having regulations, like the cost of the depression in the 30's, and the depression of the next 10 years, the S&L crisis, all the disability paid to people with carpal tunnel syndrome, the cost of (or the costs not of) cleaning the CO2 out of the air, jobs lost when all the large trees in an area get cut down in a few years, and all the other costs of this nature. Everyone Should Read This Over at Counterspin Central, beginning with the words, "LET ME EXPLAIN SOMETHING." I am enough of a student of history, particularly the Roman Republic, to see this as the first step toward a troubling future for our country. The slippery slope metaphor tends to be overused, but in this case, I think it is not a cliche. Think long and hard about this one. It may be the beginning of the end of our Republic. It may take decades, and the transition may go slowly enough that we hardly perceive it until it is too late. 9/21/2002 True Cost of War TalkLeft pointed me to Daily Kos (earning both a place in my Essential Links) where there is a piece on the true costs of Gulf War I. That's the war where we had the "easy" victory. Just one example, from a Rocky Mountain News story that they reference: More than 159,000 American Gulf War veterans are receiving disability payments from the Department of Veterans Affairs.That should give us all a LOT to think about. Remember, the justification for war is that Iraq has and will use weapons of mass destruction. If we REALLY think Iraq will use them, maybe we shouldn't be so hot for war. Dionne, Jr. in today's Washington Post: A president seeking a unified nation does himself no good by distorting the arguments of others -- or by obliquely accusing them of failing to act in the interests of the United States.As I have been saying, we learned from VietNam that it is so important for the country to be behind any military effort we must engage in. For this reason it is essential to do everything possible to keep such an important decision AWAY from the election, not schedule it to COINCIDE with the election. 9/19/2002 How They Do It (Part 3) (Part 2 is here, Part 4 is here.) I came across this in a review by Jerry M. Landay, of David Brock's book, Blinded by the Right. It summarizes the process of the right-wing "conveyer belt" that I described in today's previous entry, How It's Done. They ape Leninist, Trotskyite, and Maoist tactics to undermine the left. Wealthy patrons of the radical right have copied the architecture of Stalin’s international popular front, creating a constellation of hundreds of activist front-organizations that comprise a network of right-wing activism: • Well-heeled policy assembly lines like the Heritage Foundation; • Such comfort zones for scholars and faux scholars as the Claremont Institute; • Litigation hit-squads such as the Washington Legal Foundation; • Harriers of mainstream journalism, including bloviator Reed Irvine’s Accuracy in Media; • And the powerful Federalist Society, the legal think-tank that penetrates the Federal government under Bush and reshapes American law and jurisprudence by suing the life out of it. Hard-starboard forces importantly exploit the tactics of Antonio Gramsci, founder of the Italian Communist Party. Gramsci preached that a political movement, to prosper, must capture a nation’s culture. For two decades, the well-meshed power apparatus of the radical right has been doing just that, leaving the enfeebled Left in the dust with its single-issue myopia, dilettanti politics, weak-kneed funders, and a Democratic Party chained by Clinton, Gore, and Lieberman to a paralyzing dependency on corporate handouts. The right has conceived and promoted the policies America argues about, then frames the debate around them. Those doing the job are rep-tied, horn-rimmed members of the massive conservative propaganda machine who operate under the mythic smokescreen they created called the “liberal press.” Conservatives go on to manage the anti-left political dirt that oozes into newspapers and onto television news. How They Do It (Part 2) (Part 1 is here, Part 3 is here) The other day I recommended this article, Lessons of Right-Wing Philanthropy, by Karen Paget, which gives some very good background information about how the right has built the "conservative movement" that has become so powerful. Paget describes how the right-wing "think tanks" crank out messages that are repeated over and over again and eventually become conventional wisdom. They use a "conveyer belt" approach. At one end is the "knowledge production" process where so-called "research" is done by "scholars" who publish in right-wing "journals." Then the marketing departments translate this into "popularized" wording using carefully researched words (like "death tax" to replace "inheritance income tax"), and the result is pumped out to the public through the media using op-ed pieces, right-wing pundits and columnists, and repeated endlessly. Examples of this process include years of pounding out messages like "Social Security is going broke - the money won't be there" or "public schools are failing, give the poor a choice." After the public is softened up the right-wingers come in with their "solutions." (These "solutions" always seem to involve schemes that make the rich richer and the poor poorer.) I just found another great article, also from The American Prospect, by Robert Kuttner, titled, "Philanthropy and Movements." Kuttner attended a right-wing roundtable where panelists bragged about what they have accomplished over the years - and how they pulled it off. And he gets into what needs to be done to balance this. The people and foundations that fund moderate- and progressive-oriented programs need to learn from what the right has done. 25-or-so years ago the right got organized and pulled together several "foundations" plus individual and corporate donors to set up the Heritage Fondation and several other of the "think tanks" described above. This can be done by moderates and progressives, using the right's success as a blueprint. Plenty of money is there on the progressive/moderate side, it just has not been used as effectively; it has not been coordinated and used as part of a long-term "movement" strategy. Unions Actually Mentioned in Media! I forgot to mention - I saw something in the New York Times Sunday that blew me away! There was an article about professionals joining UNIONS, and people talking about joining unions! This was the first such article I've seen in -ANY- media for YEARS! It blew me away - the NYT actually moving a little toward the center, mainstream America. Previously the NYT had not written much about unions that I have seen, which placed it squarely in the middle of the corporate-dominated Bush agenda. So I guess they really ARE a little to the left of Bush, possibly as far left as what we used to call centrist Republican. From the story: A union provides job security, which isn't a bad idea in this economy. A 1999 Hart study found that young union members are more likely than young nonunion employees to have full-time, permanent jobs (74 percent versus 49 percent), earn more than $20,000 a year (70 percent versus 38 percent), be covered by a pension plan with an employer contribution (63 percent versus 39 percent) and have an employer-provided health plan (76 percent versus 40 percent).If you set up any kind of reasonable yardstick to measure media bias -- reporting on unions and regular working people organizing unions, discussion of socialized medicine, editorials calling for capping executive compensation at a reasonable amount like, maybe, $500,000, increasing the progressiveness of the income tax and increasing the top levels to 90%... -- by ANY yardstick that takes into account left-of-center views, I do not know of a single media outlet in the United States that even comes close. How They Do It (Part 1) Suppose you need to do some work involving an important issue like tax cuts, minimum wage, the environment, globalization, etc. Perhaps you'll be talking to a class or writing an article. Maybe you're in a political campaign or trying to get a law passed or just trying to build up public support for an environmental cause. Where can you get information and materials – perhaps even some coaching with the wording? If you're coming from a moderate or progressive perspective it can be quite difficult to quickly find resources – information and materials – to help you prepare. But if you are in the "conservative movement" there are very powerful resources available to assist you. I've been looking at the resources offered by the Heritage Foundation, just one of the many "think tanks" that give the conservative movement so much power. These think tanks use a process that takes supposedly "academic" research and plugs it into a marketing machine, "popularizing" the language used so that it will connect with ordinary people, and finally sending this product out through dozens of communications channels. (There's a 1998 article about these think tanks and this process here. If you really want to get started at understanding why the right seems to be just storming over everything that we - and most of the public - believe in, read this article as a starting point.) Let's pretend we're right-wingers all worked up by Rush this morning, and looking for information to help us stomp some liberals. Let's take a trip to Heritage Research. (Note - right-click and use "Open in New Window" so you can keep reading this while looking at the pages I'm referring to.) Notice the list of issues to choose from. As the page says, "All thirty of Heritage's policy issue pages feature archived research, expert contact information, and links to related interactive products." How does this work? Suppose you need information to help you argue from the right-wing perspective about taxes. Click on their Taxes research page. This page links you to to research articles, backgrounders and WebMemos, all offering the "conservative" perspective on the issue, with the implied credibility of being prepared by "experts" and "scholars". (Never mind that these so-called experts and scholars have credentials that come from other right-wing funded organizations.) On the right of the page are links to "Commentary" prepared by experts to feed you ideas, and even "Experts" for you to contact on your issue. There are links to multimedia materials, news about related events, and supporting materials like charts & visuals. Click on (because I like the title) Corporate Expatriation Protects American Jobs. The author explains how companies moving offshore to avoid taxes is good for Americans. You have a one-stop shop for all your far-right propaganda points! Click Back a few times to get to the Research page again. Click on The Candidate's Briefing Book on the right of the page. Here you get another list of issues, but these direct you to information that is useful in a campaign-type setting, presented in short, ready-to-repeat wording. (You might recognize some of this wording, because you can't turn on a TV or radio without hearing it.) Click on Briefing Book Chapter. Here you get a comprehensive briefing on the subject, with lists of "facts" – all supporting the "conservative" view – charts, and strategies. At the end of the briefing book is a list of experts you can call on, with their phone numbers. Click Back and be sure to look at the downloadable "Pocket Card" with its prepared "talking points." (Extra credit, see how many people on TV and radio, or op-ed pieces and letters-to-the-editor in the paper repeat these very points word-for-word). Click Back again and take a look at Quick Hits, with its short bursts of ready-to-spread propaganda points. Also available at Heritage are webcast lectures, media clips, speakers (for your TV or radio show), newsletters, and books (written by Heritage staff). Heritage also has a database of "2200 public policy experts by area of expertise", and "A searchable database of the conservative movement, presenting detailed information on over 300 public policy organizations in the U.S" searchable by organization type. Once you are thoroughly indoctrinated there's also a Job Bank, that "assists conservatives in finding employment with conservative Congressional Offices, faith-based organizations, other public policy organizations, lobbying groups and trade associations". Finally, Heritage offers links to "The Conservative Community" where you can find your way to The Insider, "A monthly compilation of publication abstracts, events and news from conservative policy organizations around the country." If you are a conservative, you have powerful resources available, Heritage being just one of many. It can be completely overwhelming to start digging into what's going on with the right-wing movement, and can be demoralizing as well. There are hundreds of millions of dollars each year going into this operation and it is so well-established and has vast resources. And all of this to what end? To convince blue-collar workers they should sacrifice affordable health insurance and better schools and so much more just so the rich can get more tax cuts! But don't lose heart - even with this going on for almost 30 years now Gore got more votes and Bush STILL needs to drum up a war to distract the public from their terrible (and obvious) failures. It's ONLY the Politics! On The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer today, Senate Majority Leader Daschle said that the Bush Administration has not actually come to Congress to request a resolution about Iraq. In other words, this all really was just a political marketing campaign to the public, to get political support before the election. It was all about going to the press and the public with a "wedge issue" to beat up Democrats with and make them look bad. "General" Rove forgot to even bother to actually approach the Congress for the Iraq resolutions - it wasn't a part of the equation! A Recent Exchange (8/28/2002) Sir, Thanx for posting your web log. Your entry today, "Today's Google Experiment - Watch a Smear Spread" just floored me. I've known of this machine for quite some time and it amazes me how many of my fellow citizens either "don't get it" or who just don't care. Do you have a clue as to why this propaganda machine is so effective, why there are so many people who actually believe all this stuff? Are they hearing what they think they want to hear? Do you see any hope that things will change for the better anytime soon or do you think things will have to get a lot uglier first? Sorry to dump, but I don't see any reasons to be optimistic... Can I suggest as a good starting point reading the book, "Blinded By The Right" by David Brock. He goes into such good detail and the book is causing more and more people to start being aware of the web of right-wing organizations and how they pump out this crap. 9/16/2002 Go Joe! Joe Conason has been poking around in Bush's book, "A Charge to Keep." He found this passage, "I also learned the lesson of Vietnam. Our nation should be slow to engage troops. But when we do so, we must do so with ferocity. We must never go into a conflict unless we go in committed to win. We can never again ask the military to fight a political war. If America's strategic interests are at stake, if diplomacy fails, if no other option will accomplish the objective, the Commander in Chief must define the mission and allow the military to achieve it."Joe writes, "I know he didn't really write his book -- politicians rarely do -- but did he read it?" To repeat, Bush (or someone) wrote, "We can never again ask the military to fight a political war." Democrats Growing Spines! Washington Post: Democrats are starting to question the timing of the Iraq campaign. Karl Rove, Bush's top political adviser, has been photographed with the president in meetings about Iraq and has been put forward to speak publicly about the timing of the Iraq rollout. was Rove who argued earlier this year that the war on terrorism should be part of Republicans' campaigns this year. Last week, White House political aides encouraged GOP candidates to emphasize national security. Also, Andrew H. Card Jr., Bush's chief of staff, said last week that the White House held back on promoting the Iraq policy in the summer because, "from a marketing point of view, you don't introduce new products in August." And Rep. Thomas M. Davis III (Va.), chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, made an Iraq vote explicitly political, saying, "People are going to want to know, before the elections, where their representatives stand."As I have said before - we learned from VietNam how important it is to have the country united behind major military operations. Sensible leadership would do everything they could to AVOID the divisiveness of having the war debate occur during campaign season. This was planned to occur DURING campaign season. He is a divider,not a uniter. 9/15/2002 Democrat Party Sideshow points out that Dick Cheney, in his non-partisan "uniter-not-a-divider" appearance on the Rush Limbaugh show last week, talked about the "Democrat Party". Sideshow thinks the mispronunciation sounds illiterate. (I thought this about Bush using "nucular" all through Thursday's UN speech.) Actually, this particular misuse of "Democratic Party" dates back to the early-60s John Birch Society days, and those far-right-wingers that we used to call "kooks." ("Precious bodily fluids.") These are the guys who used to say "Jew York Times" but now have PR training so they say "liberal media" to cover what they really mean. In this new Republican Party it's a badge of honor to come from the farthest-possible-right-wing backgrounds, and the kooks show off by using "Democrat Party" as a code word to each other. Overwhelm Some days the bad news flys at you so fast ... it seems like the Bush strategy is to overwhelm people by doing so many bad things that you lose track and give up... (See Scorecard of Evil. They list the major ones, except even they have a hard time keeping up.) Today starts with, With White House Approval, E.P.A. Pollution Report Omits Global Warming Section. Here's one - using government money to fund churches. Or how about funneling government money to help The Party recruit religious voters - vote for us, you get the money - don't vote for us, you don't get the money. Here's one about the Bush people planning the Iraq invasion even before he took office. Not only that, it's essentially a blueprint for dominating the world. (Why spend all that money on military if you don't put it to good use taking over the world?) Here they're talking about the spoils of war being the reason for the war. "The importance of Iraq's oil has made it potentially one of the administration's biggest bargaining chips in negotiations to win backing from the U.N. Security Council and Western allies..." The White House and Administration departments are not cooperating with Congressional investigations of what led up to 9/11. This isn't Bush, it's his comrades, Christian stations working to get NPR stations thrown off the air. The pharmaceutical industry will be running ads for Republicans who help them kill prescription drug bills. Those thee Moslem men who were falsely accused in Florida are no longer welcome at the hospital they were travelling to work at - even though they did nothing wrong at all. 9/14/2002 Not About the Election This cartoon was in my paper, the San Jose Mercury News, this morning. It has Saddam with his arm around Daschle and Lieberman and the caption "Weapons of Mass Destruction." AM radio is 24/7 all about how the Democrats are traitors. The right-wing machine, pundits, etc... are talking only about how the Democrats are holding up the President. They even brag about how they have "boxed the Democrats in on this one." This isn't even ABOUT Iraq to them. This is entirely about politics and the election. Yesterday Bush said that the Democrats are holding things up. Then yesterday V.P. Cheney appeared on the no-partisan, non-divisive Rush Limbaugh show. Remember, he was originally scheduled to appear on September 11! The transcript is here. I've edited the following to focus on the Democrat-bashing political side of it. Read the transcript for the full "interview." Keep in mind that the tactic of accusing the opposition of what YOU are doing is called inoculation. Also keep in mind that there is no evidence at all that there is any immediate national security need to have this happen NOW, interfering with the election. They started this on LABOR DAY, the traditional day for the beginning of campaign season. Rush:...The perception here is that the administration is not engaged in politics and that this is a matter of national security. But because of the way the opposition party, up till yesterday in some cases, was opposing this, this appeared to be just another political issue. Cheney:... Some people say, "Well, it's an election year." Well, that has nothing to do with it. Every other year is an election year and you can't take half the calendar and put it off-limits. ... But there does come a time when you have a Constitutional obligation to honor the oath you swore when you took office, that you have to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and there's an emerging threat here that must be addressed. Rush: Prior to the president's speech, the opposition party in Washington was continually saying they hadn't seen enough evidence and that they didn't think there was any urgency. In fact, even after the speech, some said, "Well, there's nothing to hasten this before the election, no reason to go." Yet these are the same people, some of the same people who, in 1998, said things that could hardly be different from what you and President Bush have said. Cheney: Well, I think that's all true, Rush. I don't disagree with any of that. My take on it, in terms of how members are responding, is that there are a number of folks who have questions, and should have questions. These are important issues and they shouldn't be treated lightly, and Congress has an interest, a legitimate interest, and we have an obligation as an administration to provide as much information as we can. But also, I think there's some very serious folks out there in both parties, and my guess is that in the final analysis, we will be able to get out of Congress a resolution to support whatever the president needs to do, and that it will pass by overwhelming margins in both houses. I think it's that strong. ... Rush: Speaking of wreaking havoc on our society, freedom and country, the opponents of this action seem to dredge up a new horror story weekly to try to frighten the American people into opposing this, or at least not supporting it. The most recent one is that global recession will occur if there is an attack on Iraq. Now, this same thing was alleged in 1991, and if I recall, the oil price actually plummeted to $10 a barrel after that conflict. What are the potential economic impacts, both in America and around the world?The Republicans have launched a full-court press on this one. Obviously this has been the plan for the election all along. The Democrats might have only a few weeks remaining in charge of the Senate and subpoena power. This may be the ONLY chance to look into how this election is being manipulated! The Republicans are capable of THIS, imagine what's coming for the 2004 election! In a few weeks they could have the House, the Senate AND the White House. The Democrats in the Senate MUST do something NOW to show the public how the Republicans are manipulating things! It Just Spreads This comes to me from Public Nusiance, who got it from Atrios. From its inception we have watched the NEA smear as it spreads. We all know it is a lie. We learned how it was just made up. We've talked about those (here, here and here) who repeat it, KNOWING it is a lie. I've been writing about this, and sometimes fuming. Here is an example of a true believer picking up the lie and believing it: The National Education Association preaches anti-Americanism, telling teachers to indoctrinate students with stories of American imperialism.The whole piece is worth reading, because it seems to me to be pretty much on the edge of a call to violence against non-Christians and I think it shows where tolerating these kinds of lies, unchecked, WILL take us. Remember, Timothy McVeigh was filled up with this kind of stuff by Rush and the rest of this right wing liar crowd. Obviously those who make up and spread this stuff feel little pressure to stop. Very little public ostracism. Few, if any, notable "responsible" people speak out. Empire MaxSpeak points to this Tom Hayden piece, It's Empire Versus Democracy, on conservative calls for conquest of the Middle East and other regions. The Wall Street Journal gave the secret away in an October 2001 editorial declaring that September 11 created a unique political opportunity to advance the whole Republican-conservative platform. Worse, the real conservative agenda is to create an American empire, not simply rout out the al-Qaida organization. No sooner had the September 11 attacks occurred than the Wall Street Journal's editorial writer, Max Boot, published "The Case for American Empire" in the conservative organ, the Weekly Standard. Boot endorsed a return to nineteenth century British imperialism, this time under American hegemony. "Afghanistan and other troubled lands today cry out for the sort of enlightened foreign administration once provided by self-confident Englishmen in jodhpurs and pith helmets" (see NYT, Mar. 31, 2002). The orchestrated call for empire was "out of the closet," according to conservative columnist Charles Krautheimer, and was echoed in the works of historians Paul Kennedy and Robert D. Kaplan (who found nice things to say about Emperor Tiberius, namely that he used force to "preserve a peace that was favorable to Rome").And later ... Mujahideen, including Osama Bin Laden, were not "evil" when the U.S. government supplied them with weapons and funding in the 1980s, because then the Islamic fundamentalists were battling true "evil" in the form of the Soviet Union. But the label of evil has its uses. It serves to shut off rational debate, for example. It stimulates public fear. It justifies the killing of people whose annihilation might be problematic if they were classified as simply desperate. Was It Tested? In his speech to the U.N. yesterday President Bush repeatedly mispronounced "nuclear." If this Iraq adventure doesn't go well and turns into a Middle East war this may be one of the important speeches in this century's history. For generations the world will analyze every action, every meeting, every nuance associated with the events leading to the war, just as they have done with the Cuban Missile Crisis. So why would the President's aides prepare him so poorly for such an important appearance before the world? Or did they? Was this word focus group tested? Does it make him sound "tough" to voters? Perhaps this is just another calculated piece of a cynical effort to manipulate the election? Journalistic Integrity Blog readers may have noticed that there are certain popular blog topics that I have avoided. I have specifically avoided ever mentioning a certain writer whose initials, if you add an 'S', would be "ASS." Joe Conason writes about paying for Salon's Premium edition when they pay ASS and other right-wingers who lie. I used to recommend that people pay for Salon Premium. With the recent debut of the ASS writer I have to cease my recommendation. Perhaps Salon is trying to gain readers through controversey, but journalistic integrity has to count for something. If we are ever to free ourselves of the influence of the right-wing propaganda and character assasination machine (that Salon has done a good job of writing about) it will happen because honest people shun those who repeatedly get caught lying. For example I recently wrote about George Will who appears on ABC, which gives him credibility. But he repeatedly lies and repeats calculated right-wing smear machine lies, such as the recent NEA smear. I feel rather strongly about this issue of flat-out lies getting into print. Salon has no business publishing the words of liars who have repeatedly been caught lying. Some of their readers might not be in on the joke. 9/10/2002 Thin Line Between Company and Party (Part 2) In Part 1 I wrote about Enron and its web of connections to the Republican Party, channeling money to The Party through campaign cash, lobbying, think tanks, paying salaries of campaign workers, etc. (Sorry, I forgot to mention use of Enron jets and facilities for Party activities…) This sort of thing is not unique to Enron. Racicot sits on Siebel's board of directors. Seibel Systems CEO sends e-mails to employees, "asking" them to "donate" $5,000 to a "PAC" which all goes to Republicans. (Having been an executive, I hate to think what would happen to an executive who chooses not do "donate." Maybe regular employees can get away with it, but don't forget this is in a time of terrible job fear here in Silicon Valley.) "Siebel, the brash chief executive officer of software maker Siebel Systems Inc., last year beamed e-mails to hundreds of his most fervent employees with an unmistakable message: Cough up $5,000 each for the company's new political action committee. The response was something this town has never seen: within weeks, more than 350 workers heeded the CEO's call..."Also in the article, Seibel meets with lawmakers, talks to them about writing his company's products into the Homeland Security bill and then writes them a check, making it clear that the check is linked to the talk. Seible and people from his company get special meetings to demonstrate products to members of the Administration. The reason given for refusing to release the $34 million is that the Fund provides aid to Chinese government agencies that force women to have abortions. The mission reported that it found no evidence that the program "knowingly supported or participated in the management of a program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization" and recommended that the funds be released. 9/09/2002 PE in 1929 OK, it looks like the PE ratio of the S&P 500 in October, 1929 was 21, and the PE of the DOW was 17. The current PE ratio of the DOW is 21.6 and the current PE ratio of the S&P 500 is 24.3 but I don't know what "earnings" measure this is using. Following are verbatim excerpts from Bill Gross: “STOCKS STINK…Stocks are way over-valued…the Dow’s fair-value is about 5000. “…stocks stink and will continue to do so until they're priced appropriately, probably somewhere around Dow 5000, S&P 650, or NASDAQ God knows where."When you hear ANYONE talk about "the bottom" of the market, see if they mention the key word - VALUATION! The valuation of the market is still remarkably high. It is currently at the level that inspired Greenspan to make his famous "irrational exuberance" remark. I read somewhere that they are currently at the valuation that the market crashed FROM in 1929, but I haven't had time to research whether that is accurate. What was the average PE ratio in 1929, and what is it now? When someone tries to talk to you about the market having a certain return over the long run, here's the catch. If you buy stocks at a certain valuation (P/E ratio -- stock price per dollar of earnings of the company) several years later the stocks should have a higher price AT THAT SAME VALUATION because over time average corporate earnings have risen and therefore should rise, over time. But RIGHT NOW stocks have a very very (very) high valuation - the P/E ratio is much much higher than the historical P/E ratio. Usually the reason for a high P/E ratio is expectations that earnings are going to go way up, and soon. But are there reasons for such expectations at this time? Companies had been screwing with their books to make earnings appear higher, they are likely to stop screwing with the books (for a while), so earnings are certainly not likely to rise (as they had been doing) due to that factor. On top of that the economy is no where near solid so we should not expect any big boost in earnings due to a bug surge in the economy. So \there is no explanation for this high valuation that is based on expected good news. Unless you think that war with Iraq will be good news. Usually in such circumstances you should expect P/E ratios to start falling. If you expect they are likely to they fall to historic averages they have a LONG way still to fall. Let me put it another way, people think because stocks prices have fallen they are therefore low. Look at this chart to see if you think they have fallen enough to be "low". Now, if you can think of some reason for stocks to be really really high, buy more stocks. Going On And On I realize that I have been going on and on about Iraq in the last few days. I want to make one more point. I've already made the following points: 1) There was a series of "terrorist threats" that coincided with breaking news harmful to the Bush administration, and these threats stopped when the press began mentioning the coincident timing. 2) The drive to start the war began coincident with the start of "election season." 3) We learned from VietNam that the country must be behind sustained military action. Launching this war-drive in election season risks dividing the country, not uniting it. There must be an immediate national emergency to justify this timing. 4) The administration has made no case that there is a current national emergency NOW that requires the war-drive coincident with election season. 5) The previous Iraq war was started based on phony "babies thrown from incubators" evidence, and Bush was caught this weekend providing phony evidence. And the point I want to make today: What's DIFFERENT about any Iraqi weapons development, when Iraq, North Korea, China, and who knows how many other countries are engaged in these activities. To be clear, I am not saying that we shouldn't do something about it if Iraq or any of these other countries are developing such weapons. 9/08/2002 Iraq, Redundant Again Labor Day is the traditional start of political campaign season. This year, Labor Day was also when the drumbeat for war really kicked in. Coincidence? You decide. Is there any evidence that anything in Iraq has changed NOW? Is there a reason this is happening NOW instead of 3 months ago? To be redundant again, we learned from VietNam that the country must be together when we go into a conflict. If things do not go well, we could be in this for a long time and our forces will NEED the country behind them. It must not begin with a potential for domestic conflict built into the origins of the effort! ANY appearance of domestic political considerations being part of the calculation must be avoided at all costs. Yet here we have the Administration firing up the war talk in sync with campaign season. That is potentially divisive, to put it mildly. If this were REALLY a national emergency, the leaders would be doing everything they could to avoid it being associated with Congressional election season. This has Carl Rove written all over it. Congress MUST find out if this has as any part of it an attempt to manipulate the elections. How To Start a War Thanks to Tom Tomorrow for pointing to this article about the previous Iraq war. When George Bush Sr. was trying to whip us into war with Iraq he tried out one story after another. He even said at one point that Saddam was "worse than Hitler". One would fizzle and he would try the next one. Eventually there was a story about the Iraqis throwing babies out of incubators, and we went to war. Except it never happened. The story was manufactured by a PR firm, Hill & Knowlton. Here's a link to a fairly extensive description of the Hill & Knowlton incubator story. Here, here and here are more links to this story. I'm not saying we shouldn't have gone into that war. Maybe we should have. After the war the inspectors did find (and destroyed) chemical, biological and nuclear weapons development facilities. But we went into that war with a U.N. mandate and a multi-national force. That was THE WORLD deciding to do something about Iraq. We were part of a world effort - Iraq was not a threat to us and we were RESPONDING to an action by Iraq. THIS time we are not responding to anything Iraq has done, we would be distracting from the war on terrorism. Seeking to build a case Saturday that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was developing weapons of mass destruction, President Bush cited a satellite photograph and a report by the U.N. atomic energy agency as evidence of Iraq’s impending rearmament. But in response to a report by NBC News, a senior administration official acknowledged Saturday night that the U.N. report drew no such conclusion, and a spokesman for the U.N. agency said the photograph had been misinterpreted.Bush said Iraq may be 6 months from having a nuclear weapon. Amazing Timing In my previous entry I wrote about the amazing timing of this drumbeat for war with Iraq. That got me thinking about the amazing timing of this year's flurry of terrorist threat alerts. They amazingly seemed to happen whenever something was hitting the news that could hurt Bush politically. Remember? Remember the country being scared out of its wits, time after time? And with the Padilla "dirty bomb" scare the timing become so amazing - reporting that he was arrested months after he really was arrested but just after some harmful political news - that mainstream reporters started writing about the amazing timing. And then the terrorist threats stopped! Another example of amazing timing. Just after the mainstream press started writing that the timing of the terrorist threats was amazing, the terrorist threats amazingly stopped. Amazing! A Choice? John Kerry says, We Still Have a Choice on Iraq. Uh, John, HELLO!, did you miss the 100 American and British warplanes attacking Iraq yesterday? It's already STARTED, John! I mean, DUH! Bush snuck another one past the Constitution, John, and what are the Democrats going to DO about it, John? You wrote, "For the American people to accept the legitimacy of this conflict and give their consent to it, the Bush administration must first present detailed evidence of the threat of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction and then prove that all other avenues of protecting our nation's security interests have been exhausted." There's ANOTHER thing they're going to have to prove. They're going to have to prove that something is DIFFERENT right now from what was happening in Iraq 6 months ago or a year ago or 3 months ago instead of right NOW, because otherwise I'm going to think that this is just too suspiciously timed to manipulate the election, and I don't like that. This country learned the hard way in VietNam that it is important to have the WHOLE public behind you when you go to war, not just a manipulated majority and an angry minority that sees too clearly how the rest were manipulated. So if this is REALLY serious, and this is REALLY a threat to the country the LAST THING that should be happening is a drumbeat of war just in time to change the focus of the election in the Republicans' favor. What would I like to see? I'd like to see a hearing on whether Carl Rove has had ANYTHING AT ALL to do with any aspect of the "War on Terrorism." Because there is no more serious crime than manipulating a war for political objectives. 9/05/2002 Not Reporting on the ONGOING War in Iraq? Is there some reason this major story just isn't being reported in the American press? I mean, some GOOD reason? Well Worth Reading The other day I wrote that the lack of union and worker issues in the media clearly demonstrates the effect of corporate ownership of news sources. Today Joe Kenehan Center points to this article on worker issues, We Rarely See Those Who Labor. From the article: A study by Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR), a liberal media-watchdog group, found that the evening news programs of CBS, ABC and NBC recently devoted only 2 percent of their total air time to workers' issues, including child care, the minimum wage, and workplace safety and health. Tax Cuts for Billionaires I did something fun today. I went to the Heritage Foundation's PolicyExperts.org and looked up some right-wing organizations. All I did was sort by "National Research Organizations" so it shows me the entire list. Then I started picking a right-wing organization at random and going to Cursor's Media Transparency to see who is funding them. I did this several times. Guess what I found? There are hundreds of right-wing organizations, but they are almost all funded by a foundation whose name contains Scaife, Olin or Bradley, and a few others. The public, the media and policymakers think they hear a wide range of voices. For example, you might see on C-SPAN or MSNBC a panel with experts from five or six different organizations. But in fact the likelihood is you are hearing the voice of Scaife, Olin, Bradley or one or two other billionaires. NO WONDER so much of the national policy debate is about giving huge tax cuts to billionaires! 9/04/2002 Timing is Everything So, how about that Iraq timing, huh? Almost exactly 2 months before the election and it looks like things are really heating up. Looks like it could really come to a head in ... OCTOBER. Is it in any way possible that the timing is political? I'm hearing a lot from the right wing PR machine about how this is a Democrat vs Republican thing (and not much about reasons to attack Iraq). They're spinning this entirely as a political issue. Anyone been listening to Rush Limbaugh lately? Much of his show this morning was about how the Democrats are placing the country in danger by trying to manipulate public opinion on Iraq against Bush in an attempt to get an issue in the election. I've often observed that the right-wingers accuse us of what they're up to themselves. It's called inoculating. And the usual suspects have been all over the media accusing the Democrats of using Iraq as a political issue. It seems to me that if they are looking for public support and want to keep the divisiveness down that they would do everything they could to keep things QUIET until after the election to avoid even the APPEARANCE of this being politically motivated. Even if the need was truly great to do something it would be best to keep it away from the election so they could go into a war with an undivided public, to put it redundantly. I think it is becoming blatantly obvious that they are pulling an October Surprise here. This timing is extremely unfortunate for our soldiers because it risks public support for at home. Government Again Thinking about right-wing anti-government rhetoric, I like to swap a few words so that the real meaning is more clear. For example, for "government" I like to substitute some version of "the people" or "the interests of the people." For "government bureaucracy", some version of "public accountability over the use of public funds." Here's how it works: Ronald Reagan said "Government is the problem." Substitute in "public oversight and accountability". Or suppose you hear "government regulations are holding back business," you can substitute in "public control over health and safety issues making sure that the public benefit." "Big government" - "Lots of public oversight and things done for the benefit of the people." Substitute some variation of "autocratic anti-democratic organizations where decisions are made by a few amoral people who sole interest is to funnel profits to a few people at the top" for corporations. 9/03/2002 Big Government "Big government" is a great sounding phrase, but does it actually mean anything? I've always loved to taunt right-wingers with totally unfair questions like "What does 'big government' mean?", and "WHAT programs would you cut to make government smaller, and how much money does it save, and does it make a difference in balancing the budget?" (See if you can ever find a right-winger who can answer that one. "Waste, fraud and abuse" isn't an answer.) They will never, ever, ever, ever say that they oppose Social Security or Medicare - at least not if they're running for any kind of public office so long as we remain some imitation of a democracy that sometimes lets the people's will decide what happens. The only "big government" left is military and interest on the debt, both of which funnel huge amounts of our money into rich people's pockets. Taking it Easy Buzzflash points out that Bush has spent 42% of his time as President at a leisure destination - Camp David (123 days), Kennebunkport (12) and his Texas ranch (115). When Reagan was President I had a standard Halloween costume. I'd wear pajamas and a Reagan mask and say I was dressed up as Reagan attending a cabinet meeting. Read This Again Friday I wrote a little piece pointing to a New York Times report of Bush saying that the deficit is "incredibly positive news" because it forces the government to stop growing. It's worth reading again, and understanding what he's saying. He's admitting that the deficits are intentional. "Incredibly good news" because it advances the right-wing strategy of cutting back our government. Never mind that the government is us. Never mind that almost everything the government spends money on benefits us - that's what government IS. Never mind that he has proposed the largest increases in government growth in decades with his military buildup and his Fatherland Security department. Never mind that it means no prescription drug plan or health insurance for children, and cutbacks in almost everything good that our government does. And never mind that deficits mean we are borrowing more and more money and every year we have to pay interest on that borrowing. Let's not let him get away with claiming now that the deficits aren't his fault, that he "hit the trifecta" or anything else he says. Today's Google Experiment Speaking of George Will, today's Google Experiment looks back to the 1980 presidential election. During the election the Reagan campaign (among other things) ran an intelligence operation against the Carter White House involving active military personnel. One of their actions was the theft of Carter's debate briefing books from the White House. (That's right, a White House military aid stealing notebooks from the Oval Office, never disciplined by the "patriotic" Republicans.) So go to Google and search for "George Will Carter Reagan stolen briefing book". Read some of the websites that pop up. (If you're not old enough to remember the criminality of the Reagan crowd I recommend spending a few more minutes looking into some of the things that happened between 1980 and 1992.) Here we have a briefing book stolen from the White House, we have "journalist" George Will in possession of this stolen property and helping prepare Reagan for the debates, and on the night of the debate "journalist" Will sat as an ABC commentator on the debates. A "journalist" in possession of stolen briefing books, possibly the biggest political news story of the decade at that time, and he kept it secret. Thanks Thanks to Shadow of the Hegemon, for referring to and writing about what I wrote yesterday and for inspiring me to explain my anonymity, which I've been meaning to do. Replying to what was written, I don't think that Will or North or Limbaugh think for a second that what they wrote about the NEA is true - or care. Sure, others are believers, but they have a responsibility to contact NEA before writing that kind of stuff about them, and editors shouldn't be publishing it without finding out if they did contact NEA. I completely agree that they are using a technique of conditioning the public to distrust mainstream news sources. IssuesGuy, if you want to change the way that people debate, the first and most important step is to deal with the ridiculous, hateful, and sickening rhetoric aimed at the left, the kind that neo-conservatives specialize in and that the left (both moderate and radical) has ignored and explained away for far too long.Hey, that's the theme of this weblog! Anonymity I haven't made my name public here and use "Issuesguy" because I first named this weblog "I Have Issues," and because the way the Blogger software works I needed a name to use. (I would have changed it to "Forestguy" if I could figure out how to do it without adding another team member.) I want this to be a weblog ABOUT, not a weblog BY. I think I have some good reasons for that. First and foremost this focuses criticism to content. I mean this limits a critic's ability to attack the content by attacking & attempting to discredit the author - a favored right-wing technique. If you don't know who the author is you're stuck with having to look at the content and argue with that. Too bad. I'm not saying that I expect to be writing anything worthy of right-wingers taking note. My second reason is more that this is NOT an ego-based endeavor so why put my name on it. And my third reason is that I have been discussing politics online since way back when I was getting HUGE bills from CompuServe, and I've received plenty enough nasty e-mail and threats, it is jarring every single time and can ruin a day. More Fuming (Referring to the piece below this one) What get's me is that Mona Charen knows that the NEA didn't do what she's writing. She is lying, and knows it, and is getting paid well to repeat these lies because the end result is people believing bad things about the NEA, and "liberals." And all the others participating in this lie, like George Will and Ollie North and Rush Limbaugh and all the rest of this crowd. It is a lie. They know it is a lie. They are repeating it because focus groups have shown that this particular lie will stir up the public in certain lasting ways, and if they keep circulating lies like this the public becomes more inclined to vote Republicans into power so they can give big tax breaks and defense contracts to their cronies. And, of course, pay Mona Caren and the rest of them lots of money. We know how this works. (Read "Blinded By the Right." This is from the guy that started the whole "Clinton Scandals" lie. He talks about how they do it, how much they're paid, and the people doing it. People like Ted Olson, rewarded by Bush with the job of Solicitor General of the United States.) We know that they circulate lies to achieve their political goals. But the editor of the San Jose Mercury News has a RESPONSIBILITY to know, too! And a RESPONSIBILITY to look at a piece of trash like this column and say, "This is just a lie and I will not print it in my paper." And "responsible" columnists like David Broder have a responsibility to the public to alert them to this kind of lie, this kind of calculated smear. Just a couple of weeks ago we all watched ANOTHER calculated smear spread through the media. This was the one about Gore and the Springsteen tickets. It was just another made-up lie. But it was repeated. Back then I wrote about the old "Clinton haircut" smear, how that was spread. These are just lies, character assassination, and the way it works is the Republicans make up lies and spread them and when one lie dies down they make up a new lie and spread that one. How long can this character assassination/lie machine go on before enough of us are telling the rest of us what it is, making it ineffective? It worked on Carter and got Reagan elected. It kept Clinton from accomplishing very much. It got Bush elected. A Lie Repeated, and Repeated, and Repeated! I'm fuming again. My morning is ruined by reading this damned LIE repeated in this morning's newspaper. Mona Charen, nationally syndicated columnist, in today's San Jose Mercury News, repeats and extends the lie about the NEA, starting it now with, all capitalized, "LIBERALS," "LIBERALS want to prevent Americans from feeling any sense of righteous fury about Sept. 11. How dare we, when we were responsible for slavery, imperialism, racism and an inadequate minimum wage?" She continues with the lie you're already familiar with, "The National Education Association has weighed in with suggestions to guide teachers on the first anniversary of the terror attacks. ``Do not suggest,'' the NEA advises, ``that any group is responsible. Do not repeat the speculations of others, including newscasters. Blaming . . . is especially difficult in terrorist situations because someone is at fault.'' Well, yes, someone is always at fault. And unless those that someone is a right-wing radio host, liberals just hate to see anyone blamed for anything." Listen to this whopper, "In New York (the NEA would like this), a teacher was suspended merely for telling her class that all of the individuals who attacked this country on Sept. 11 were Arabs." Reminds me of the time right-wingers were telling people about the guy "arrested for praying", but when I looked into it the guy was kneeling in the middle of the busiest intersection in town blocking all traffic. There's more, much more. "The NEA also tells teachers to say: ``We have no reason to believe that the attacks were part of an organized plan of any other country. The terrorists acted independently, without the sanction of any nation.'' This is false. Did Afghanistan not fully participate in the terrorists' attacks?" Well, no, actually, "Afghanistan" did NOT fully participate, didn't participate AT ALL, in the terror attack. They "Harbored" the terrorists. Here's how it ends, "The liberal hold on our education system amounts to a moral disarmament of the nation. Before there can be an Army, Navy and Air Force capable of protecting us, there must be a citizenry that believes we are worth defending." I am just fuming. How long is a lie like this allowed to spread. By now I'm sure that much of the public believes this. And, playing on emotions from the terrible Sept. 11 attacks there could be real consequences to stirring up the public with such inflammatory lies! How can my newspaper reprint something like this, lies from first word to last. How can this so-called "columnist" ever be printed in newspapers after knowingly circulating such trash! And most important, why is there no voice informing the public that this is a cruel, calculated, inflammatory lie, circulated by professional LIARS! Where are the so-called "responsible" journalists and editors when LIES like this are being circulated! Are they hiding, afraid to be branded with the dreaded "liberal" word? Have they no guts? 8/31/2002 Ideology Meets Reality Earlier this week the New York Times had a story about implementation of Bush's big-deal Education Act. After all the talk about "failing schools" and freeing children from the grip of the socialist school systems, and national priorities, here's what happened "In Baltimore, of 30,000 children eligible to transfer to better schools, 347 have applied to fill 194 slots, school officials said." In my opinion the "education crisis" is a good example of a phony issue, whipped up to support ideological objectives, and driven to the top of the national agenda by use of large amounts of money and the Republican marketing machine. The Republicans poured so many millions and millions of dollars into getting their message out that public schools are bad, pounded the public with message after message that "the public schools are failing." It's a relentless drumbeat, and this week's smear story about the NEA "blaming America" is part of their strategy. You've probably seen the polls that show that most people think the education system is failing, but at the same time most people think THEIR local schools are just fine. It's those OTHER schools. EVERYONE knows that the schools are failing, but no one sees that in their OWN school districts. There MUST BE a problem, everyone says so, except not in the schools WE see, so it must be a problem in those OTHER schools. (It's like the Social Security system. EVERYONE knows it won't be there for them, even though the figures show that it's solid. Or like how before the 1984 election the got everyone believing that Congress is bad, but not THEIR member of Congress.) So Bush campaigned for President, playing on the belief the Republicans have created in the public mind about the terrible schools and how bad they are for the children and how so many parents are trying to escape, etc. It became the highest concern among those polled (except THEIR schools). He got his big-deal Education Act passed. Now they're implementing it and what are they finding? They say annual surpluses will return shortly if the economy rebounds and if Democratic efforts to boost spending are rebuffed." NY Times, Aug. 28, 2002, "But White House officials and Congressional Republicans argued that the new deficits merely reflected the recent economic slowdown, the price of the war in Afghanistan and the costs of beefing up domestic security against terrorism. Dan L. Crippen, the director of the budget office, said the recession and the plunging stock markets appeared to have played a bigger role than the tax cuts in reducing tax revenues." Wash. Post, Aug. 27, 2002, "The president believes the lesson from today's CBO numbers is that Congress needs to hold the line on spending," White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said from the president's ranch in Crawford, Tex. "And if Congress won't do it, the president will do it for Congress." And in another article, same paper, same day, "The real danger to the budget comes from pork-barrel spending by the Congress," declared White House spokesman Ari Fleischer. MaxSpeak today gets into this with a very good piece suggesting that Republicans want deficits on purpose as a way to limit the size of government. Let me help sort this out, and note the date as he tries to blame 9/11. 8/29/2002 8/27/2002 Today's Google Experiment - Watch a Smear Spread The Daily Howler has been exploring an ongoing smear against the NEA, claiming that the teacher's union is asking teachers to "blame America first" for the 9/11 terrorism. The initial smear appeared in the Washington Times, the newspaper published by the Moonies. The original article referenced a paper by Brian Lippincott, saying that we should be careful not to blame all Muslims for 9/11. The smear twists this into a claim that the NEA says to teach children that we shouldn't blame the terrorists but should instead "blame America." So let's search on the words "Brian Lippincott NEA" and see what we find. Guess what? It's the usual web of Scaiff-funded right-wing organizations leading the list - Traditional Values Coalition, Concerned Women for America, Townhall (Heritage Foundation). Now let's try searching on "NEA Blame America First". Look at this gem from Ollie North! "The NEA -- and other 9-11 Deniers -- cannot be trusted to "Remember Sept. 11," when they refuse to forthrightly acknowledge what really happened on that terrible Tuesday morning. Wouldn't it be nice to have a teacher's union that didn't want to blame America first?" Keep in mind that this is just a bald-faced LIE, and click beyond the first page of Google results, at all the organizations and "columnists" repeating this lie! Look at this one, "NEA exploits 9/11 as propaganda tool" This is how it's done, folks. The Republicans have a huge machine out there and we know that about half the public believes this stuff! Question 1 - How many "reputable" journalists do you see standing up to this, and denouncing the lies? Do You Know Where YOUR 401K Is? Arianna Huffington in today's LA Times talks about a big mutual fund conflict of interest. They get fees for managing 401K accounts of large companies. If they vote against management of these corporations, or dump their stocks from their mutual funds, the owners of the shares of the fund (you) might do better, but the fund's management (them) rick having the companies dump them from managing the company's 401K plan, and the resulting revenues of the are in peril. THEIR money comes from management fees, NOT from how well their funds perform. "For instance, the nation's largest mutual fund, Fidelity, which owns 5.3% of Tyco's stock, also earned $2 million in 1999 for its part in running Tyco's 401(k) plans. Last year, more than 50% of Fidelity's $9.8 billion in revenue was generated by administering 401(k) plans and other employee benefit services for about 11,000 companies, including Philip Morris, Shell, IBM, Monsanto and Ford." Those running the mutual funds know that if they rock the boat they jeopardize their chances of getting the contracts for these services. So, with ownership essentially AWOL, irresponsible corporate execs have been allowed to run wild. Not surprisingly, mutual funds have consistently refused to disclose how they vote. As California Treasurer Phil Angelides told me, "That silence speaks volumes."Whose interests do you think they are going to choose? They're Not Listening Today's Washington Post talks about the politics of the deficit. Voters trust Bush and the Republicans on the economy more than the Democrats, even after it is explained that the deficit has soared, unemployment is up, the economy has collapsed, etc. A poll for the Democratic Leadership Council this spring by Mark Penn dramatically illustrates Dowd's point. Voters trusted Bush over congressional Democrats, 47 to 40 percent, to handle the economy. Penn then went for the jugular: "Before President Bush took office, the country was experiencing the fastest economic growth, the first budget surplus in a generation and the lowest unemployment in history. Since President Bush took office, the economy has entered a recession, the trillion-dollar surplus is now a serious deficit and 1.4 million people have lost their jobs," his poll states, before again asking who voters trust. And again, Bush came out on top, 46 to 44 percent. Said Democratic pollster Anna Greenberg: "People are confused by what the deficit is, what the debt is. The numbers are of such magnitude that they're hard to comprehend. As an issue, it's incredibly complicated."I think they're not listening. I think "we" - moderates and progressives - underestimate just how many people are listening to Rush Limbaugh. It doesn't matter what the facts are. If Rush says it's Clinton's fault, about half the people in this country are going to repeat that. Illustrating my point is a line in today's New York Times article, The Selling of America, Bush Style. The idea that advertising could "sway the ideas of whole populations, change their habits of life, create belief, practically universal in any policy or idea" ...Democrats aren't going to get their message across until they are ready to start doing what it takes to counter the right-wing message machine. Yesterday I wrote about Democrats needing to push to bring back the Fairness Doctrine. AM radio has become a 24/7 advertisement for the Republican Party.
